How to use MailUp to import and verify your email lists

If you use MailUp to send your email campaigns and would like to verify your lists, our integration makes it possible for you to import them directly from your MailUp account. To get started with MailUp email verification, all you need to do is to link your MailUp and DataValidation accounts.

In order to use the MailUp integration, you need to have a DataValidation account and an activated MailUp account with at least one email list uploaded to it. Also, you need to create custom Recipient Fields in your MailUp account before linking with DataValidation -- so that we can sync the verification results to it.

Before we get to verifying your email lists, we will show you how to create the custom Recipient Fields.

  • In your MailUp account, click on Settings in the left-hand menu, then select Account Settings and then Recipient Fields

  • Next, scroll down to the bottom of the page and click on Add, and then, under *Field **, input DVGrade, and click on Add, leaving the Default value field empty, and the Dynamic and Required checkboxes unchecked. Then repeat this process and add three more Recipient Fields: DVSafeToSend, DVIsRoleBased, and DVIsDisposable. Each of these fields will contain data pushed by DataValidation once the verification results have been purchased. We will explain what is pushed to these fields after we’ve covered the verification process first.

Now that you have your MailUp account ready, you can link it to DataValidation by following the following easy steps:

  • Log into your DataValidation account;

  • Click on + Add Lists and select Integrations from the left hand menu, then click on Link with MailUp;

  • You will be directed to the MailUp login page. Input your MailUp credentials and click on Log On;

  • You will then be asked to confirm your permission for DataValidation to access the lists in your MailUp account. You will need to click on Confirm;

  • Next, you will see that your MailUp account has appeared on the list of import sources on the import page. When you click on it, you will see your lists with checkboxes next to them. Check the boxes corresponding to the lists you want to import, and click on Import Selected Lists;

  • The verification process will now begin by importing your list and then estimating the list’s overall quality. Once it’s done, you will see a score appear on the list report card, and a View Details button. The score represents the overall health state of your list, from 0 to 100. You can click on Grade Breakdown and you will get a free preview of the verification results - a pie chart that shows the percentages of valid and invalid email addresses in your list based on the grades that were assigned to your email addresses. In order to see the grade categories, hover your mouse over each section of the chart.
    IMPORTANT NOTE: Do not make any modifications to your list in MailUp while it is being verified.

  • In order to get the full verification results synced back to your MailUp account, you will need to make a purchase. Whether you already purchased a token pack or not, click on Add to cart, which will add the list to your cart.

  • Next, click on Checkout. If you already have tokens in your account, you will do the checkout using the tokens, which will be deducted from your account. If you didn’t purchase tokens in advance, your price will be calculated based on the total number of email addresses in your cart, cumulated from all the lists in your cart. To make the payment, click on Checkout. If you didn’t already add a credit card to your account, you will be asked to do so.

  • Next, the final stage of the verification process will be performed, and then the results will be exported to your MailUp account.

  • What we do in your MailUp account is creating a group within your list which contains only the email addresses that were graded A+ or A. This is very convenient for you, because you can simply start your campaigns to this group as it is. So once the export process has completed, go to your MailUp account, select the list that you verified from the menu on the left, go to Groups, and you will see a new group that we created, called DV Safe to send. Click on it, then click on Search/Manage Email to see which email addresses are safe to email.

  • You can start sending your email campaigns to the DV Safe to send group.

The DV Safe to send group is there so that you can start sending newsletters to your valid email addresses right away. But if you want to have more control over your contacts, for example you want to filter the disposable addresses out of your Safe to send group as well, or you want to send emails to a different grade category (which we do not recommend), you can do so by using the Recipient Fields that were mentioned at the beginning of this article.

If you go to your list and click on any recipient, then click on Show all fields, you will see that the four fields you added are displayed at the end of the list, and they contain the info that we synced over.

You will find a brief explanation of each field below:

  • DVGrade contains the grade that was assigned to each email address.
  • DVSafeToSend tells you if an email address is safe to send to or not. Basically this column tells you if the email address was graded A+/A or not, as these are the addresses that were confirmed as valid by our system
  • DVIsRoleBased tells you if the email address is a role-based email address or not
  • DVIsDisposable tells you if the email address is disposable (temporary) or not

If you want these fields to show up in your main list page as columns, so you can check them out at a glance, go to your the Recipients -> Email page, and click on Set columns to show.

You can have only 5 columns displayed at a time, so you will most likely need to remove one of the columns if you want the DataValidation field to be displayed, so you will need to click on the X next to the field you want to delete, and click on the blank slot that showed up, and select the field from the drop-down menu, and click on Save.

The custom Recipient Fields are most useful because they enable you to further filter the DV Safe to send group. For example, here’s how to make sure no disposable email addresses make it to your Safe to send group:

  • First, go to Recipients and select Groups, and then click on the DV Safe to send group, and then click on Search / Manage Email.

  • Next, click on the + sign next to Match fields and scroll all the way down and look for the DVIsDisposable field, and input NOT-DI, and then click on Save.

  • You will now see that a new filter has been added. Next, click on Move / Copy, and you will see a drop-down menu will show up. Make sure the Add to this group option is selected, and select the DV Safe to send group from the associated field, click on Apply, and confirm that you want these changes to be applied by clicking Yes when you are prompted to do so.

So now your DV Safe to send group contains only non-disposable A+ and A graded email addresses. Of course, this is just an example. The fun part is that you can apply your own filters for the DV Safe to send group, as you see fit for your specific situation.

IMPORTANT NOTE: You cannot sync to MailUp a list that you uploaded to DataValidation from your computer. You can sync to MailUp only those lists that were imported from MailUp.
